Marijuana edibles are food products designed with marijuana in them or infused with marijuana flavors. Edibles can be an effective alternative to smoking or ingesting marijuana directly. Edible products come in several forms, e.g. cookies, brownies, candy, including fruit or animal shaped gummies, chewable gummy bears, and as liquids.
Washington State has legalized the production, distribution and sale of marijuana edibles, but each state still has differing laws on the production, distribution and sale of these delicious treats. The most important factor that prospective buyers should consider when considering an edibles product is whether the edibles will be considered legal in the buyer’s state. Some edibles have been deemed illegal in certain jurisdictions and have been removed from stores altogether in other jurisdictions. Therefore, one should research the edibles being considered before ordering and should contact their local government to inquire about the laws specific to their jurisdiction. Some examples include candy, cookies and potpourri.
In addition, buyers should consider the amount of THC (drugged-potency cannabis extract) present in their edibles and whether the edibles include CBD (cannabis essential oil). Today, some marijuana edibles include both of these components. A good example would be a chocolate bar that is laced with cannabis extract. Other edibles include lip balm, lip gloss, tea infusions and potpourri with CBD.
Common marijuana edibles include brownies, cookies and potpourri that are intended for oral consumption. Brownies are small, sweet and typically edible, but they do include some fat and calories. Cookies and potpourri are traditionally intended for smoking, but may also be enjoyed in the oven or eaten on a plate. Edible forms of marijuana such as brownies are not appropriate for children younger than twelve years old, as they may become habituated and attempt to consume more than they should.
While it is true that there are no major health effects when ingesting marijuana edibles, it is also important to understand that there are many serious consequences when smoking marijuana as well. Smoking marijuana can cause an elevated heart rate and body temperature, severe coughing, diarrhea, sweating, restlessness, and anxiety. Marijuana smoke has also been linked to the development of lungs and brain tumors. Ingesting it in any form will also cause an increased heart rate and body temperature along with severe coughing, diarrhea, sweating, and loss of appetite. It is extremely important to understand that smoking marijuana is extremely dangerous and should never be attempted by persons under the age of 18 or persons who suffer from lung disease or cancer.
There are currently three main types of marijuana edibles available. The two most popular are shatter and rolling marijuana edibles. While consuming the edibles via a cigarette is the most common way to consume them, it is also possible to purchase them in a roll-to-roll format which makes ingestion a much easier process. These products typically contain less than one gram of the active ingredient in each product, which is also extremely important to note.
An interesting new entrant into the field of cannabis and marijuana edibles is CBD, or Cannabidiol. This substance is believed to be less harmful than THC and has been shown to relieve some of the symptoms of debilitating chronic diseases such as schizophrenia. A company in New Zealand is currently researching the effects of CBD on patients suffering from glaucoma, an uncommon type of blindness caused by damage to the optic nerve. In addition to reducing nausea and vomiting, CBD is believed to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy patients undergoing treatment. While the science behind CBD is not completely understood, the substance is undergoing clinical trials in the United States.
As more studies are completed and research is done on the health benefits of cannabis and marijuana edibles become more accessible, the sector will no doubt see continued growth. In addition to edible cannabis, there are many different types of infused food items made from the cannabis plant. From oils, to teas and cookies, the variety of food items made from cannabis is seemingly endless.
